Today there are 80 million Americans over the age of 50.
Many of these individuals are aging well and living longer
than any time in history, but still far too many people are
inactive and sedentary. We can do more, and our best weapons
are literally in our own hands: the food we choose to eat, and
the activities that get us moving.
We are in the midst of a boom in the aging population,
making it all the more urgent that we do everything we can
to help older adults to be active and healthy. The rates of
chronic disease and health care expenditures are much higher
among older adults, and obesity rates among older adults
have increased in recent years along with every other age
group. The good news is that older adults tend to be healthier,
feel better and maintain their mobility and independence
longer when they take these simple steps.
Today’s older adults who are interested in making these
lifestyle choices are looking for confirmation that these lifestyle
changes are within their reach. Many of them also seek
encouragement and companionship, making it important for
local organizations to offer older adults practical suggestions
and programs for making wise nutrition choices and increasing
their physical activity.
AoA has responded to this need with the campaign You Can!
Steps to Healthier Aging campaign. Help at Home's commitment to this campaign will help to create public awareness and make programs available to boost physical activity and improve food choices among older Americans.
The campaign is part of the U.S. Health and Human Service’s Steps to a Healthier US initiative which encourages Americans of every age to make healthier choices.

“Although I was the last one to admit I needed some help around here, I am the first to confess you all were right.
“Thanks so much for truly caring about me and for all the little things (and not so little too) you do for me around the house.
“I will forever remain grateful.”
- Bill Murray
